Tetra Pak Unveils Bioreactor RF to Solve Fermentation Scaling Challenges
Tetra Pak has launched the Bioreactor RF, a significant advancement aimed at overcoming the challenges faced in scaling up precision fermentation processes. This marks the company's first dedicated industrial bioreactor, following its acquisition of Bioreactors.net in December 2025. The Bioreactor RF addresses longstanding mechanical and economic barriers that have hindered the widespread adoption of fermentation-derived ingredients.
Innovative Design to Prevent Contamination
The Bioreactor RF employs a patented magnetic agitation system that eliminates mechanical seals, which are common in conventional bioreactor designs. These seals often degrade over time and lead to contamination. By removing this element, Tetra Pak has significantly reduced the risk of batch contamination, which can be costly, with losses typically around €1,000 per cubic meter.
Consistent Software and Mechanical Architecture
The new system features a unified design platform that ranges from 10 liters to 50,000 liters, maintaining consistent control logic and operating philosophy across all units. This consistency allows for seamless scaling from pilot to commercial production with minimal adjustments, reducing both operator training time and the time to market.
Cost-Effective Solutions
By leveraging its engineering scale, Tetra Pak has managed to cut initial investment costs by up to 8% through an integrated platform design that eliminates the need for custom onsite engineering. Additionally, the high levels of automation in the Bioreactor RF can reduce ongoing operational costs by up to 12%.
Rafael Barros, director of the New Food Business Stream at Tetra Pak, emphasized the importance of repeatability in industrial fermentation, highlighting the shift towards treating precision fermentation as a standardized process rather than an experimental venture.
