The demand for coffee alternatives is growing as consumers seek low-caffeine options with added functional benefits. This trend is driven by changing consumer priorities around sleep quality and stress management.

The market for low-caffeine coffee alternatives is witnessing significant growth as consumers increasingly seek beverages that offer both the ritual of coffee drinking and functional benefits without the high caffeine content. According to Laboratoire PYC, this shift is driven by changing consumer priorities, including sleep quality, stress management, and ingredient transparency.

In France, 60% of adults report limiting caffeine consumption to improve sleep, while in Italy, 63% of Generation Z consumers express a desire for clearer caffeine content labeling. These trends highlight an opportunity for food and beverage manufacturers to develop products that cater to these evolving consumer needs.

Innovation in coffee alternatives is being fueled by the use of botanical ingredients, mushrooms, and adaptogens. Popular ingredients include matcha, Lion’s Mane mushroom, rhodiola, ashwagandha, and reishi. Additionally, chicory and barley are used to replicate the traditional roasted coffee flavors. The beauty-from-within market is also seeing the incorporation of collagen peptides into coffee alternative products.

Matcha, in particular, is gaining popularity. Data from Laboratoire PYC indicates that 56% of UK Generation Z consumers associate matcha with sustained energy. In the United States, matcha consumption has increased from 12% in 2021 to 16% in 2025, reflecting a growing interest in alternative energy sources.

For manufacturers, entering or expanding in this category presents challenges, particularly in formulation. Successful product development requires not only selecting the right ingredients but also ensuring taste, aroma, texture, and regulatory compliance. Laboratoire PYC supports brands in these areas, leveraging its extensive experience in developing over 13,000 formulations across four decades.

Recent product developments by Laboratoire PYC include Cocoa Boost, Golden Mind, and Collagen Skinfuse Matcha. The latter, presented at Vitafoods, contains 10mg of caffeine per 100ml, significantly lower than the 47mg per 100ml found in instant coffee. The company notes increasing demand for such products, particularly from brands in pharmacy and e-commerce channels.

Aurélie De Schuyteneer, marketing & communications manager at Laboratoire PYC, emphasizes the importance of combining functionality with an authentic coffee-drinking experience. She states, “Consumers want to preserve the pleasure and ritual of drinking coffee while enjoying functional benefits tailored to their needs.”
