Phytokana Ingredients Secures Funding for New Protein Facility
Phytokana Ingredients, a Canadian company specializing in pulse proteins and flour ingredients, has successfully raised CAD 25 million, equivalent to approximately $17.7 million. This financing is aimed at supporting the development of a new plant protein processing facility in Strathmore, Alberta.
The funding round was led by an undisclosed investor, alongside existing shareholders, employees, and company directors. The specific terms of the financing have not been made public. With this financial backing, Phytokana is set to move forward to the Final Investment Decision stage for its planned 30,000-metric-tonne-per-annum dry fractionation facility.
The Strathmore facility is designed to produce high-value protein concentrates and high-protein flour ingredients. These products are intended for both domestic and international markets, catering to the growing demand for protein-enriched and 'better-for-you' food options.
Phytokana has a strategic focus on developing, processing, and commercializing sustainable pulse-based proteins and flour ingredients, particularly within the baked goods sector. The company will now proceed with final engineering, procurement, and project execution activities in preparation for the plant's construction.
This recent funding follows Phytokana's announcement of long-term definitive offtake agreements valued at approximately CAD 450 million ($319 million). Additionally, the company has secured cumulative sales opportunities exceeding CAD 500 million ($354.7 million) through executed Memorandums of Understanding.
Vincent Chahley, chairman of Phytokana, expressed gratitude for the investors' continued confidence, stating, "Proceeding to Final Investment Decision is the culmination of years of disciplined execution, technical development, and customer engagement." He emphasized the project's potential to create significant value for Alberta farmers while strengthening Canada's food ingredient manufacturing sector.
