Lifeway Foods Dominates Amid Growing U.S. Kefir Market

The U.S. kefir market has seen significant growth, with a 29.1% increase in value and a 26.1% rise in volume over the past year, according to Circana. Lifeway Foods, a key player in this sector, accounts for approximately 85% of the market share, making it a dominant force in shaping market trends.

Lifeway's influence extends beyond traditional kefir products, as the company has diversified into related segments like butter, spreads, and salad dressings. It offers a variety of products, including flavored and seasonal kefirs, organic and grass-fed lines, and probiotic smoothies enriched with collagen. Additionally, its product range includes protein and creatine drinks, targeting consumers interested in holistic nutrition.

The company's differentiation strategy is crucial in a competitive market segment that includes not only cultured yogurt but also the broader functional drinks category, such as protein drinks and kombucha. To remain competitive, Lifeway has introduced products like Muscle Mates, a lactose-free ready-to-drink line that combines kefir cultures with 20g of protein and 5g of creatine, catering to exercise and wellness needs.

Financially, Lifeway's performance mirrors the positive trend in the market. For fiscal year 2025, the company reported record net sales of $212.5 million, up from $186.8 million the previous year, and net income rose to $13.9 million from $9 million. This momentum continued into the first quarter of 2026, with sales increasing 36.7% year-over-year to $63 million, and net income reaching $4.7 million. The company has set a target of $45 million to $50 million in adjusted EBITDA for fiscal year 2027.

Lifeway's leadership was tested when Danone, a French multinational, attempted to acquire the company with offers of $283 million and $307 million. Lifeway rejected these offers, arguing they undervalued the business. Danone eventually sold its approximately 23% stake in Lifeway for around $67 million in May 2026, allowing Lifeway to focus on its growth strategy without the distraction of a corporate takeover.

The booming demand for cultured dairy products continues to attract competitors, but Lifeway remains the dominant player in the U.S. kefir market. The company's strategic moves and financial resilience highlight its central role in the ongoing kefir boom.
