Beverage Brands Adapt with Creative Collaborations and Packaging Innovations
Beverage brands are increasingly moving beyond their core functions by adopting innovative approaches such as creating limited edition products, collectible packaging, and lifestyle branding strategies. Partner at Pond Design, Fredrik Svalstedt, has noted that products designed for collection rather than just consumption are becoming a significant trend, with companies like Sprite capitalizing on this by collaborating with the NBA to produce limited-edition cans that are sought after by fans.
Another growing trend in the beverage industry is cross-category collaborations. Traditionally observed in the spirits sector by brands like Absolut and Johnnie Walker, these collaborations are now also encompassing beers, sodas, and ready-to-drink beverages. A notable example is the collaboration between Heinz and Heineken for the World Cup, which included a barbecue beer pack featuring a built-in Heinz ketchup holder.
The concept of drop culture is also being adopted, where brands release small, limited-edition batches without any guarantee of restocking. This strategy appeals to consumers looking for unique experiences and allows brands like BuzzBallz to create buzz with products like the World Cup 'SoccerBallz' edition.
Lifestyle branding is becoming crucial for beverage brands striving to be more than just thirst-quenching options. Svalstedt highlights how important it is for brands to link their identity to cultural moments, citing Sweden's Åbro and its 'Ey’Bro' beer as a successful example. The product launched as a tribute to a viral YouTube video and became the country's second best-selling beer by volume in 2021.
Innovation in packaging is also a key factor in consumer engagement, according to Svalstedt. Packaging now serves as an initial touchpoint, with tactile and visually appealing designs becoming central to product identity. Brands like Ghia, MOTH Cocktails, and Via Carota Cocktails have invested in distinctive and memorable packaging that elevates the consumer experience.
