Varun Beverages Expands into Kenya with $32 Million Dairy Acquisition
Varun Beverages, one of PepsiCo’s largest bottlers outside of the United States, has announced its entry into the Kenyan market through the acquisition of Devyani Food Industries’ dairy, juice, and packaged-water operations. The deal, valued at $32 million, centers around a manufacturing plant located in Nakuru, a city northwest of Nairobi. This facility spans 52 acres and includes approximately 17,500 square meters of built-up space.
The transaction, which is scheduled for completion by August 1, 2026, is a related-party deal as both Varun Beverages and Devyani Food Industries are part of the Jaipuria family’s business interests. Varun Beverages has stated that the purchase was conducted on an arm’s-length basis to ensure transparency for minority shareholders, with terms set according to Indian listing regulations.
Kenya is known for its developed dairy industry and increasing demand for packaged drinks. The acquisition provides Varun Beverages with a ready-to-operate facility that aligns with its expansion strategy in East Africa. The company's move into dairy, juice, and bottled water marks a significant diversification from its traditional focus on soft drinks.
Devyani Food Industries has been a longstanding player in the Kenyan market, specializing in processed dairy, fruit juices, and bottled water. Integrating these product lines into Varun Beverages will bring them under a publicly listed company, offering investors transparency and potentially enhancing liquidity for the Jaipuria family.
India’s corporate sector has been increasingly investing in Africa, with Varun Beverages looking to capitalize on the continent's growth potential, particularly in regions like East Africa, which present opportunities due to young populations and urbanization. The acquisition is part of a broader trend of Indian consumer companies establishing production bases in Africa, reflecting a shift from merely exporting to owning local production facilities.
