Suntory Invests £14.5 Million in Advanced Blackcurrant Processing Facility
Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I (SBF GB&I) has announced a significant investment of £14.5 million in a new state-of-the-art blackcurrant processing facility located in Herefordshire. This facility, developed in collaboration with Döhler Group's Bevisol Ltd, is set to enhance the production of Ribena by modernizing fruit preparation and increasing processing capability.
The new facility will commence operations in time for the current year's blackcurrant harvest. It is strategically located in Ledbury, Herefordshire, which is in proximity to major growing regions and SBF GB&I’s factory. This investment is aimed at securing the long-term future of British blackcurrant farming, ensuring a dedicated modern facility for this critical stage of production.
Karl Ottomar, Supply Chain Director at SBF GB&I, emphasized the significance of this development, stating that it marks a major milestone for the company and the future of British blackcurrant production. The investment seeks to support the supply chain while maintaining strong ties with local farmers.
Technological Advancements
The facility introduces several advanced technologies intended to improve efficiency and operational performance. These include advanced evaporators utilizing vapor recompression technology, cleanable membrane filtration systems, automated weighing, tipping, and handling systems, as well as digital smart tag tracking for enhanced supply chain visibility.
Support for Local Communities
The investment is also expected to benefit local communities. SBF GB&I sources blackcurrants from 33 farms across the UK, which collectively harvest approximately 10,500 tonnes of fruit annually. The project will create 12 new full-time jobs and an additional 30 seasonal roles, supporting employment in the region.
Farming Minister Stephen Morgan highlighted the investment as a vote of confidence in British farming and a step towards building a more resilient and sustainable food system in the UK. This project is part of a broader £57.5 million investment by Suntory Beverage & Food in the UK supply chain, which includes upgrades to the Coleford factory.
Gero Spika, Global Account Director at Döhler, noted that the partnership with SBF GB&I aims to enhance local production capabilities and support the long-term future of British blackcurrant farming, reflecting a commitment to innovation and regional employment.
