A new study conducted by researchers from the University of Exeter has found that beetroot juice can help reduce blood pressure in older adults by affecting the oral microbiome. The study, published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine, involved participants in their 60s and 70s who consumed nitrate-rich beetroot juice twice daily for two weeks. Results showed a reduction in blood pressure among these participants, compared to those who consumed a nitrate-free placebo.

The study did not find the same blood pressure-lowering effect in younger adults, although changes in their oral microbiome were observed. The researchers identified that the nitrate content in beetroot juice suppresses potentially harmful bacteria in the mouth, which facilitates the conversion of dietary nitrate to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is known to relax blood vessels and regulate blood pressure.

Professor Anni Vanhatalo, the lead author of the study, mentioned that older adults naturally produce less nitric oxide as they age, making them more susceptible to high blood pressure. The study suggests that increasing the intake of nitrate-rich vegetables, such as beetroot, may have significant long-term health benefits for this demographic.

Aside from beetroot juice, other nitrate-rich foods include spinach, rocket, fennel, celery, and kale. This study underscores the potential health benefits of incorporating these vegetables into the diet to support cardiovascular health.

The British Heart Foundation also notes that while eating whole beetroot increases fiber intake, concentrated beetroot juice shots may contain higher nitrate levels. The study emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet rich in nitrate-containing foods, rather than focusing on a single 'superfood'.

Although the findings are promising, the researchers highlight the need for larger clinical trials to draw more definitive conclusions. The study contributes to the understanding of how nutrition impacts blood pressure management and cardiovascular health.
