Startups Transform Matcha Preparation Into a Convenient Option
Matcha has become a popular ingredient at cafés, placing it alongside premium alternatives to coffee with a global market value projected to reach $1.03 billion by 2026, according to Grand View Research. Despite its rising popularity, the traditional preparation of matcha can be costly and complex, often leading consumers to seek at-home solutions. A new wave of beverage brands is now addressing these challenges by introducing convenient formats that simplify matcha consumption.
Chuh Matcha is among the new entrants offering canned matcha lattes in various flavors, such as spiced vanilla and blueberry. Andrew Schundler, founder of Chuh, notes that matcha has gained immense popularity recently but remains financially out-of-reach for many consumers due to steep café prices. Chuh's products aim to provide accessible, ready-to-drink options that fit busy lifestyles, further expanding matcha's appeal.
Shinzo Matcha offers single-serve flavored matcha stick packs and sparkling matcha sodas designed to streamline the preparation process. Sloane Graham from Shinzo explains that these stick packs eliminate the mess and time associated with traditional matcha preparation while preserving its quality. Additionally, the brand's matcha sodas serve as a healthier alternative to energy drinks by blending ceremonial-grade matcha with fruit flavors and natural ingredients.
The health benefits and vivid color of matcha continue to attract consumers. Startups like Chuh and Shinzo capitalize on matcha's growing demand by offering varied flavors that cater to different tastes, increasing the beverage's accessibility to a wider audience.
However, these innovations also highlight a broader trend within the beverage industry. The canned and packaged formats resemble transformations seen with coffee and kombucha, suggesting a shift towards convenience and mass-market appeal. Matcha’s adaptability to different flavors and uses positions it as a unique offering that continues to evolve into a significant sector within the functional beverage industry.
