Smurfit Westrock and Coca-Cola Collaborate on World Cup Packaging Innovations
Smurfit Westrock, a leading provider of paper-based packaging solutions, has partnered with Coca-Cola China to introduce a series of innovative packaging options for the 2026 World Cup. This initiative is designed to leverage the increased consumer spending typically seen during global sporting events like the World Cup. Past data from the 2022 World Cup indicates a significant rise in sales of snacks and beverages as fans prepared for home viewings and social gatherings.
The collaboration features a standout eight-can (330ml) gift pack engineered with an octagonal structure. This design not only offers a visually appealing presentation but also includes space for a World Cup souvenir, making it an attractive option for supermarket shelves. Smurfit Westrock's aim is to enhance the consumer experience while supporting omni-channel retail strategies.
Saverio Mayer, CEO of Smurfit Westrock EMEA & APAC, emphasized the role of innovative packaging in maximizing brand impact during major events. The company has focused on creating packaging that stands out and connects with consumers at crucial moments.
In addition to the flagship gift pack, Smurfit Westrock developed various formats tailored to different retail channels and occasions. These include a seven mini-can pack with an octagonal design, a basket-style pack, and an e-commerce solution. Throughout the project, teams worked to optimize materials and streamline production across multiple sites.
Chris Zhong, Retail Customer Marketing Manager at Coca-Cola China, noted the importance of packaging in connecting with consumers during the World Cup. The solutions developed with Smurfit Westrock aim to provide a unique consumer experience and ensure that the products stand out wherever they are sold.
