Sales Decline for Asda Amidst Price Cuts and Market Changes

Asda has reported a significant decrease in sales, with a 3.6% decline year-on-year for the 12 weeks leading up to June 14, as per the latest data from Worldpanel by Numerator. This decline is notable as it marks the sharpest drop since January, impacting Asda's market share, which fell to 11.5% from 12.1% the previous year. The company's strategy of cutting prices to attract more shoppers has not yielded the expected results, as evidenced by the increase in pre-tax losses to £989 million for the year ending December 2025, up from £599 million the previous year.

In contrast, Aldi, another major player in the UK supermarket industry, posted minimal growth with only a 0.4% increase in sales year-on-year. This growth is despite Aldi's store expansion efforts, which saw a 3.8% increase in its store estate through the opening of approximately 40 new locations. Aldi's market share has subsequently decreased to 10.7%, down from 10.9% a year ago.

Lidl, on the other hand, has continued its upward trajectory, with an 8.6% increase in sales year-on-year, boosting its market share from 8.2% to 8.7%. This performance has helped Lidl surpass Morrisons to become the fifth largest supermarket in the UK. Furthermore, Lidl has maintained its position as the fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar supermarket for 36 consecutive months, according to Worldpanel's analysis.

Ocado has emerged as the fastest-growing grocer overall, with a 13.5% increase in sales year-on-year, raising its market share from 2% to 2.2%. Meanwhile, M&S recorded an 11.7% increase in sales, although it is not included in the Worldpanel's grocery analysis due to its significant clothing and home sales.

Overall grocery take-home sales have risen by 2.4% in the four weeks leading up to June 14, with grocery spending on promotions reaching 30.4%, marking the 39th consecutive month of year-on-year increases. Worldpanel data indicates that like-for-like grocery inflation was at 3.0% during this period.

The report also highlights the impact of seasonal weather conditions, with the UK's hottest May day on record and a subsequent heatwave boosting demand for summer-related products. Sales of suncare items increased by 128%, while fresh beef burgers saw a 40% rise as households engaged in barbecues. The demand for no- and low-alcohol drinks also surged by 23%, outperforming the wider beer and cider category's 6% growth.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, noted the ongoing trend of shoppers opting for barbecue staples and healthier options during the summer months. He also commented on the competitive landscape, stating, "Nearly a third of all grocery spending is now on promotion, and that upward streak shows no sign of breaking."
