Nestlé USA Completes Removal of Artificial Colors from Its Products

Nestlé USA has announced the complete removal of artificial colors, as defined by the Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act (FD&C), from its entire US food and beverage portfolio. This achievement comes three years ahead of the company's original 2026 target. According to Marty Thompson, CEO of Nestlé USA, this step is part of a broader initiative aimed at reformulating products to meet evolving consumer expectations for cleaner and more transparent labeling.

The reformulation effort involved removing or replacing artificial colors with natural alternatives, ensuring that the quality and taste of the products remained intact. Notable examples include the reformulation of Nesquik's strawberry-flavored products to incorporate natural color sources. In addition, Nestlé's foodservice teams transitioned over 20 Nestlé Vitality beverage products to natural color sources within five months.

As part of a wider industry trend, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently eased labeling rules for products containing naturally derived colors, allowing companies to use voluntary labeling statements provided synthetic dyes like Red No. 40 and Yellow No. 6 are absent. The FDA also expanded the permitted use of natural colors such as beetroot red and spirulina extract.

Nestlé's efforts extend beyond colors to include reducing added sugars and ensuring that less than 1% of its US portfolio contains high-fructose corn syrup. The company has also committed to not using aspartame across its US offerings. New low- and zero-sugar options, such as Coffee mate Zero Sugar iced coffees and creamers, are being introduced to align with consumer health goals.

The company is enhancing product transparency through initiatives like expanding the SmartLabel program, which provides consumers with detailed product information. Nestlé is also adapting its product range to cater to the demand for functional and nutrition-focused foods. Its Vital Pursuit frozen meal line, for instance, is designed for consumers using GLP-1 medications, offering pre-portioned and protein-rich options.
