Nestlé Focuses on Nespresso as Coffee Sales Face Challenges
On July 23, 2026, Nestlé revealed its half-year earnings, showing a minor dip in overall sales. Despite this, coffee continues to be a significant contributor to the company's organic growth. Nestlé has increased prices on certain coffee products due to rising bean costs. However, CEO Philipp Navratil explained that while consumers initially adjust to price hikes, they typically revert to their regular coffee consumption habits after a short period. This pattern is observable in both general coffee sales and the Nespresso brand.
Navratil further stated that the company is concentrating on the sales of Nespresso machines. Nestlé aims to attract households with slightly weaker purchasing power compared to its traditional customer base. According to Navratil, the opportunity lies in integrating these households into the Nespresso system, ensuring they have access to their preferred coffee varieties through various channels, including Nestlé boutiques, online stores, and retail partners such as Walmart, Amazon, and Target.
This strategic focus comes at a time when U.S. consumers are experiencing financial uncertainty. Recent research by PYMNTS Intelligence indicates that while some American households maintain consumer confidence, those struggling to pay bills have seen a decline in confidence. The composite score for these financially challenged households has dropped to 40.6, highlighting a growing gap in financial resilience across different income groups.
Despite concerns about the economy, spending has remained relatively stable. PYMNTS noted that consumers with steady employment and manageable finances continue to make purchases, while those facing financial pressure have shifted their spending towards essential items and delayed non-essential purchases.
