Nestlé Acquires Yfood to Expand Its Nutrition Division
Nestlé has taken a significant step in enhancing its Nutrition division by acquiring full ownership of Yfood, a German brand known for its 'smart food' products. This acquisition marks the first major move under the leadership of the new CEO, Philipp Navratil, who assumed the role in September 2023. Nestlé initially bought a 49% stake in Yfood earlier in the year and has now purchased the remaining shares from founders Benjamin Kremer and Noel Bollmann for an undisclosed sum.
Yfood, founded in 2017 and based in Munich, has carved out a niche in the functional beverages market with its range of meal drinks, powders, and bars. These products are designed to offer complete nutrition, containing 26 essential vitamins and minerals, up to 34 grams of protein, as well as fats, carbohydrates, and dietary fibers. Yfood products are available in both dairy and vegan options, and they claim to provide superior satiety with a low glycemic index.
The acquisition aligns with Nestlé's strategy to focus on nutritionally rich food options, catering to the growing demand from health-conscious consumers and those using GLP-1 medications. Yfood has already expanded its presence to 30 European markets and employs over 150 people. Nestlé plans to leverage this foundation to further international expansion.
Yfood's integration into Nestlé's portfolio comes as the company restructures into four key areas: coffee, petcare, snacks, and nutrition. The acquisition of Yfood is part of Nestlé's renewed focus on its Nutrition division, which includes Nestlé Health Science. This division aims to bridge the gap between food, supplements, and pharmaceuticals.
Recent trends in the functional food sector show increased interest in nutrient-packed products. Notable transactions include Danone's acquisition of Huel and Lactalis's purchase of Protein Works, indicating a vibrant market for such offerings.
Nestlé's collaboration with Yfood over the past three years has already resulted in significant growth, with the brand achieving sales of around €150 million in 2025, a testament to its strong market position.
As Nestlé continues to streamline its operations and focus on growth opportunities, the acquisition of Yfood represents a strategic move to strengthen its position in the nutritionally complete food segment.
