Kirin Introduces LC-Plasma in Functional Beverages for Active Lifestyles
Kirin Holdings Company has announced the application of its immune support postbiotic, Lactococcus lactis Plasma (LC-Plasma), into the realm of functional beverages. This move is part of the company's strategy to cater to the active lifestyle nutrition segment, which includes not only sports performance but also everyday activities such as work and travel. According to Koichiro Murashima, executive officer at Kirin, maintaining immune health is crucial for staying active, especially in regions like Asia-Pacific where seasonal health challenges can disrupt daily routines.
LC-Plasma, discovered in 2010, functions by activating plasmacytoid dendritic cells, which are important for immune response. It has been shown to reduce cold-like symptoms in several clinical studies, with additional research indicating its potential to alleviate symptoms similar to those of dengue fever. In the context of sports, Tomomasa Yagisawa from Kirin highlights that athletes may experience immune suppression after intense training, leading to increased fatigue. A study published in the journal Nutrients demonstrated that athletes consuming LC-Plasma reported lower fatigue levels post-exercise compared to those taking a placebo.
Kirin has already introduced a variety of products containing LC-Plasma in Japan and is now expanding into other Asia-Pacific countries, with Singapore being the latest market. The new product, KIRIN IMMUSE Yoghurt Flavor, is tailored for Singapore's sugar-conscious consumers and has received a 'B' NutriGrade rating, indicating a healthier option in terms of sugar and saturated fat content. This beverage is part of Kirin's collaboration with Fullerton Health, where it is available through the Fullerton Health Marketplace.
Before entering Singapore, Kirin had launched LC-Plasma products in Vietnam and Taiwan, indicating a strategic expansion across the region. The company's focus on immune health as a foundation for active living aligns with growing consumer interest in functional foods that support overall wellness.
