Kirin Holdings Acquires Jamieson Wellness to Expand in the North American Market
In a significant move to expand its presence in North America, Kirin Holdings Company revealed on August 7 that it is acquiring Canada-based Jamieson Wellness for C$2.5 billion (US$1.78 billion). This decision aligns with Kirin's strategic pursuit to strengthen its health science business, which turned profitable for the first time in FY2025. Kirin had been exploring potential acquisition targets in North America since 2020, and this purchase marks their third acquisition in this sector over the past three years – following Australia-based Blackmores in 2023 and Japanese firm FANCL thereafter.
Simultaneously, the Japanese market for Foods with Function Claims (FFC) experienced growth, despite a decline in new product launches. Reports highlight a 4% increase in market size for FY2025, even as the number of new FFC notifications decreased by 26% from the previous year, reaching 1,176 due to enhanced regulatory scrutiny. This is a follow-up from the 2024 red yeast rice extract crisis that prompted stricter controls.
In the realm of supplement innovation, two Japanese brands, FUJIMI and KINS, are actively working to change consumer perceptions of protein shakes. FUJIMI, a subsidiary of the POLA-ORBIS Group, introduced fruity-flavored protein beverages, such as Clear Lemonade, offering a lighter alternative to traditional milky protein shakes. Meanwhile, KINS has developed a line called VINEGAR PROTEIN, which delivers a vinegar-like taste to further differentiate from conventional products.
Research in Japan also points to potential health benefits from functional foods. A study by Waseda University indicates that supplements containing broccoli seed extract and mustard seed powder may reduce oxidative stress and exercise-induced muscle damage after two weeks of usage, hinting at a modest impact on related biomarkers.
