Joe and the Juice Plans to Open New Location on Chelmsford High Street

Danish juice bar chain, Joe and the Juice, is seeking approval to establish a new location at 17-18 High Street, Chelmsford. The site, a Grade II-listed building, has remained vacant since Superdrug moved to a larger unit in 2024.

This location would be Joe and the Juice's second in Essex, complementing its existing branch at Stansted Airport. The company has filed planning and listed building applications with the Chelmsford City Council.

Max Shadforth from Hybrid Planning and Development Limited, representing Joe and the Juice, emphasized in planning documents the intention to create a 'modern café and juice bar' while preserving the historic character of the building and its surroundings. According to the plans, the ground floor will be designated for customer service, featuring seating and service counters, while the first floor will handle storage and staff facilities.

Furthermore, external alterations include the installation of new signs, shopfront repainting, and four air-conditioning condenser units on the roof. The building's location in Chelmsford’s primary shopping area and conservation district is highlighted as a key point for economic and social regeneration.

Planning documents assert that utilizing the vacant unit will enhance the vitality of the High Street and contribute to the broader city centre economy. The proposal awaits the decision of the Chelmsford City Council.
