India Sets Deadline for Energy Drink Label Changes
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated that major beverage companies such as PepsiCo, Red Bull, and Monster remove the 'energy drink' label from their products within the next 90 days. The deadline set for compliance is September 29. This regulatory move is aimed at addressing what the FSSAI deems misleading claims on the packaging of these popular beverages.
FSSAI is enforcing this action as a part of its broader strategy to ensure transparency and accuracy in food labeling. According to Pradip Chakraborty, a former FSSAI official who now advises various organizations within the food industry, this initiative is crucial for consumer protection and maintaining food safety standards in the country. The authority believes that current labeling could misinform consumers regarding the actual benefits and possible health risks of these products.
The decision requires the beverage giants to alter their marketing strategies and ensure that any health or energy-related claims are scientifically substantiated and clearly communicated to consumers. It is viewed as a significant regulatory intervention targeting the fast-growing energy drink market in India, valued at billions of dollars and expected to continue its upward trend.
