Hong Kong Sprite Iced Tea Gains Popularity via Social Media
Hong Kong Sprite Iced Tea has emerged as a new favorite on social media platforms, gaining significant popularity through a viral TikTok video which gathered over 20 million views. The drink combines Sprite with black tea, specifically cold-brewed directly into the soda. Unlike traditional matcha or lemon iced teas, which require specific brewing techniques, this beverage simplifies the process by using a bottle of Sprite and a few tea bags.
Hong Kong has a long-standing tradition with iced lemon tea, known locally as dong ling cha, made with ingredients like Ceylon tea, lemon, sugar, and ice. Though the viral Hong Kong Sprite Iced Tea is not typically found in local diners, known as cha cheen teng, it has innovatively adapted this cultural staple for a global audience.
The beverage preparation involves placing two to three tea bags inside a 500ml bottle of Sprite or Sprite Zero. The bottle is then turned a few times and refrigerated, allowing the tea to infuse. After removing the tea bags, the drink is enhanced with a slice of lemon and ice cubes, offering a refreshing twist.
Sprite has recognized the drink's growing fame and launched a product called 'Spritea' in Hong Kong, aiming to capitalize on the trend and outpace competitors like 7Up. While the drink is accessible at home, variations with different teas, such as Earl Grey, are also being explored for their unique flavors.
Consumers have noted the drink's balanced flavor profile, with the sweetness of Sprite and the slight bitterness of tea complementing each other. Additionally, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice is commonly added to enhance the citrus notes.
