Functional Beverages and the Competitive Landscape: Insights from Industry Leaders

Functional beverages are capturing consumer interest by pushing boundaries and innovating flavors. Danny Stepper, CEO of L.A. Libations, has been instrumental in launching successful beverage brands like ZOA, Plezi, and Bero. His latest venture, Arih, inspired by Korean megastars BTS, features a postbiotic energy drink and modern noodle concept.

Stepper emphasizes three keys to success in this competitive market. First, he advises brands to have a clear understanding of their identity and purpose. According to Stepper, "You really have to have your ‘why’ figured out. Does the world really need your product? What’s your reason to be, as a beverage?"

Timing is another crucial factor. Stepper mentions the example of Zico coconut water, highlighting how it took years to educate consumers about its hydration benefits. The competition between Zico and Vita Coco helped both brands thrive, illustrating how timing and market dynamics can impact success.

Finally, Stepper stresses the importance of perseverance. He cites Bodyarmor's ten-year journey to becoming an $8 billion acquisition by Coca-Cola as an example of the long-term commitment required for success. Similarly, Celsius, founded in 2004, took 15 years to gain mainstream momentum.

Brands must be ready to pivot and adapt. ZOA, initially launched in 2021, underwent a revamp to achieve its current market position, with Molson Coors set to take a majority stake in 2024. Stepper concludes, "You’re never done. There’s no finish line. It’s a constant evolution and you’re constantly making it better."

Industry Trends and Challenges

The beverage industry is marked by fierce competition with numerous brands vying for limited shelf space. Entrepreneurs like Huib van Bockel of Tenzing and Mike Cessario of Liquid Death are redefining categories, emphasizing unique value propositions and timing.

Conclusion

The insights from Stepper and other industry leaders underscore the complexities and demands of the functional beverage market. As brands strive to innovate and capture consumer interest, understanding timing, brand identity, and resilience remains paramount.
