Florida Citrus Industry Employs Social Media for Market Influence

The Florida Department of Citrus is focusing its marketing efforts on longstanding social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and YouTube to promote the state's citrus products, including its signature orange crop. These platforms are favored for their ability to tell visual stories and offer reliable engagement with target audiences, as explained to commissioners during a recent meeting.

The choice of platforms is strategic, aiming to reach middle-to-upper income consumers interested in health and fitness, which aligns with the department's consumer profile. While younger audience-driven sites like Snapchat and TikTok are not priorities due to legal challenges and the department's focus, robust efforts continue on visual and community-based platforms.

The department's $15 million marketing budget for the current fiscal year, as detailed in spending document HB 5001E, is aimed at enhancing consumer and influencer engagement. This budget line focuses on raising awareness about the health and safety benefits of Florida citrus products, a direction consistent with past fiscal strategies.

Rosalie Morton, senior vice president of integrated marketing at Padilla, indicated the importance of judiciously choosing promotional outlets. While acknowledging that consumers are aware of influencer compensation, they respect the ethic-driven brand endorsements these influencers provide. Morton emphasizes beginning marketing strategies with an understanding of consumer behaviors and platform-specific content preferences.

Each social media platform has a distinct role. Facebook targets generational cohorts like Millennials and Gen X, utilizing artificial intelligence for engagement. Instagram is centered on visually creative storytelling, while Pinterest acts as a visual search engine for lifestyle-related inquiries. LinkedIn remains a critical tool for engaging with industry stakeholders, and YouTube is used for educational content through long-form videos. Organic content is crucial for community-building, while paid media offers precision and wider reach.
