Europe Leads Global Energy Drink Quality in Six Continents Index

The Six Continents Index has recently published a comprehensive assessment of energy drinks from various global markets, including the US, Germany, Japan, China, Kenya, Chile, Nepal, and New Zealand. The study evaluated energy drinks based on a 36-criteria product quality index, analyzing aspects such as caffeine content, sugar types, vitamin content, pasteurization, packaging, traceability, and label readability.

According to the Index, Europe achieved the highest overall score, with Oceania and Asia following. North America, despite being the world's largest energy drink market by revenue, ranked last among the six continents. The assessment revealed that 85.7% of European energy drinks were pasteurized, compared to 12% in North America and less than 1% in South America. In Asia, 78.9% of the drinks used real sugar, whereas only 8% in North America did the same.

The report highlighted that 84% of North American energy drinks relied entirely on artificial sweeteners, contrasting with 4.2% in Europe and almost negligible percentages in Asia, Australia, South America, and Africa. European products averaged four vitamins per product, surpassing North America's average of 2.9.

Globally, aspartame was present in 10.5% of the samples, with 43% of these coming from Africa. Additionally, only 1.4% of products worldwide had clear BPA-free labeling. At the brand level, Hungary's Hell Energy topped the ranking for product quality, followed by Germany's 28 Black and another German brand, Take Off.

The study also noted that Red Bull was the only brand present in nearly every market assessed. Japan's Lipovitan-D, launched in 1962, was identified as the oldest brand in the study. The findings demonstrate how energy drink formulation varies significantly by region, with Europe favoring pasteurization, North America using more artificial sweeteners, and Asia preferring real sugar.
