Erewhon Faces New Requirements as Locations Approach Key Threshold
Erewhon, a high-end grocery chain, has recently opened its 16th location in Thousand Oaks, California. This is part of a growing expansion plan that includes two more stores set to open in downtown Los Angeles and Costa Mesa by 2027. An additional location is reportedly in the works, bringing Erewhon closer to having 20 stores in total.
Reaching the 20-store mark is significant because it triggers a federal mandate requiring any food-service establishment with 20 or more locations to display calorie counts on their menus for items considered 'restaurant-type' food. This would include a variety of Erewhon's offerings, like its steak-and-eggs breakfast burrito, estimated by nutritionists to contain between 800 to 900 calories, and the organic coconut turmeric chicken tenders, which contain more than 700 calories per serving.
The Hailey Bieber Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie, one of Erewhon's premium beverages, reportedly contains around 600 calories and is priced at $21. In accordance with the federal guidelines, Erewhon would need to provide calorie information for this and similar menu items.
Despite these upcoming regulatory changes, Erewhon did not respond to requests for comment regarding their compliance plans. As the chain's customer base is largely composed of health-conscious individuals, the mandatory disclosure of calorie information could impact their shopping habits.
Erewhon's expansion reflects a growth trend in luxury grocery markets, yet simultaneously highlights the challenges of navigating regulatory landscapes as business scales.
