DCI Detects and Closes Down a Counterfeit Juice Factory in Kabete
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) conducted a raid on a homestead in Muthua, Kabete, after receiving a tip-off from a member of the public. Upon arrival, officers found Alex Mwaruta and James Munala Inyangala actively involved in producing counterfeit juice. They were promptly arrested.
During a thorough search of the premises, the detectives discovered approximately 1,400 filled bottles of juice in 200ml and 300ml sizes. Additionally, they recovered 56 cartons of empty bottles, five packets of bottle tops, two large blue drums, and three basins of assorted colors.
Investigators also seized various manufacturing tools and materials such as rubber stamps, ink, office glue, and assorted stickers. Notably, they found an expired certificate that had previously certified the use of a Standardisation Mark for a well-known juice brand.
Further examination revealed powdery and colorless substances in 50-gram portions and also found spray bottles filled with these substances. This raised concerns about the ingredients used in the production process.
The DCI highlighted the health risks associated with consuming beverages produced in unregulated and unhygienic conditions. They also noted the economic impact on legitimate manufacturers and the potential loss in tax revenue due to these illegal operations.
The case remains under investigation, with both suspects held in custody. The DCI encouraged the public to report similar illegal activities through their toll-free and messaging services.
