Coca-Cola Diversifies Beyond Soda While Altria Expands Into Smoke-Free Products

Throughout more than fifty years, Dividend Kings such as Coca-Cola and Altria have consistently increased their dividends, displaying strong resilience even during several U.S. recessions. Coca-Cola, the world’s leading beverage company, has innovated beyond traditional soda offerings by including products like fruit juices, teas, sports drinks, energy drinks, and even alcoholic beverages in its lineup. This strategic diversification allows Coca-Cola to remain a solid investment choice despite global declines in soda consumption. A key aspect of its business is its asset-light model, where it focuses on selling concentrates and syrups to independent bottlers, helping maintain high margins.

Meanwhile, Altria, a giant in the U.S. tobacco industry, is actively transitioning its business by promoting smoke-free products such as e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches. Altria estimates these products will generate at least $5 billion in revenue by 2028, forming a significant portion of its overall sales. By increasing cigarette prices and executing share buybacks, Altria works to counteract declining cigarette sales volumes and amplify its earnings per share.

Financial analysts project Coca-Cola's earnings per share will grow at a 7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2025 to 2028, whereas Altria's is expected to climb by 13% during the same period. Currently, Coca-Cola trades at roughly 25 times next year's earnings, while Altria appears undervalued with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 12. Coca-Cola offers a forward dividend yield of 2.4% and has a manageable payout ratio of 62%, which allows room for further increases. Altria, despite a higher 89% payout ratio, provides a more substantial yield of 6.5%.

In contrast, PepsiCo, another Dividend King, faces challenges due to its asset-heavy model, which demands more capital for its beverage operations. The company's dependency on packaged foods, primarily via its Frito-Lay and Quaker brands, has put pressure on margins due to fierce competition and health trend shifts. Despite expected improvements, PepsiCo's position remains less favorable in the current market compared to Coca-Cola and Altria.

Overall, Coca-Cola and Altria demonstrate strong adaptability to changing consumer trends and market conditions, cementing their status as favorable long-term investment choices.
