Recent research indicates that gout cases in individuals aged 10 to 24 have increased by over 20% in recent decades, with a projected 70% global increase by 2050. Gout, an inflammatory arthritis, results from excess uric acid in the blood forming sharp crystals in the joints, leading to severe pain and swelling.

Jamie Christie, a nutritional biochemist at Just Vitamins, states multiple factors may be contributing to the rise in gout cases, including dietary changes, obesity levels, and an ageing population. Improved awareness and diagnosis may also play roles. Christie emphasizes the multifactorial nature of gout development, involving genetic, lifestyle, and health factors, and warns against attributing the increase to a single cause.

Rod Fraser, a 75-year-old from Dundee, has battled severe gout for 38 years. Despite medical treatments like Allopurinol and Colchicine, he struggled to find relief until he began taking Montmorency cherry juice extract, which he claims significantly reduced his symptoms within two weeks. Jamie Christie comments that the effectiveness of cherry juice extract for some individuals is not surprising due to cherries' high content of anti-inflammatory and antioxidative compounds.

Studies support the efficacy of cherry juice, as demonstrated by research on 633 individuals with gout, which showed a 35% lower risk of flare-ups when cherry extract was consumed. Christie further suggests that other dietary adjustments may help reduce gout symptoms, such as incorporating low-fat dairy products, citrus fruits rich in vitamin C, plant proteins, and fish oil, which all potentially lower uric acid levels or reduce inflammation.

Christie advises those experiencing gout to consider dietary changes, including cherry juice extract, but recommends consulting with healthcare professionals for personalized medical advice.
