Celsius Misses Earnings Expectations Amid Distribution Challenges

Celsius Holdings experienced a notable drop in its stock value, with shares declining by over 18% following the revelation that the company had not met its Q2 earnings expectations. The shortfall was primarily due to the complexities involved in integrating Celsius’ beverage lines, including Alani Nu and Rockstar, into PepsiCo’s distribution framework.

The company reported earnings of 36 cents per share on a revenue of $817.93 million, falling short of the anticipated 42 cents per share on a revenue of $887.71 million as predicted by analysts. Despite this, the company saw a year-over-year revenue growth of 10.64%.

Celsius Holdings CEO John Fieldly highlighted during an earnings call that the energy drink market continues to perform robustly within the beverage industry. Fieldly emphasized that new consumers are engaging with the brand, and the company is gaining new consumption occasions.

Challenges arose from the need to integrate brands into PepsiCo's extensive distribution system, which led to significant reorganization efforts and SKU rationalization. This involved eliminating underperforming stock-keeping units ahead of rolling out new cooler installations in stores, aiming to secure better retail space.

In response to the earnings miss, Celsius announced a $300 million stock buyback plan for the current year, signaling their belief in the company's undervaluation. CFO Jarrod Langhans noted that $124 million had already been utilized for repurchasing stock, with the remaining $176 million planned for later in the year.

Langhans stated that the decision to repurchase stock is based on the company's strong cash flow return on investment, which they consider a strategic use of capital. Furthermore, the company continues to prioritize investing in brand growth and maintaining a robust balance sheet.

The company's revenue distribution for the quarter included $387 million from Celsius, $364.4 million from Alani Nu, and $66.5 million from Rockstar. Alani Nu saw a 21% increase in net sales compared to the previous year, while Celsius experienced an 11.7% decline.
