Biona Introduces a Trio of Functional Beverages to Meet Growing Demand

Biona has expanded its product range with the introduction of three new functional beverages aimed at addressing the rising consumer demand for health-oriented drinks. The newly launched lineup consists of Immune and Fibre shots, priced at £2.99 for 95ml, and an organic Sri Lankan coconut water, sold at £4.69 per litre.

The Immune shot is formulated with organic fruit and vegetable juices combined with functional botanical extracts such as shiitake mushrooms, mustard seeds, and lichen extracts. This beverage is tailored to enhance the body’s immune response.

The Fibre shot features plum and cinnamon, along with a 6g blend of dual prebiotic fibre sourced from inulin and acacia fibre. It aims to support gut health by nourishing gut biodiversity.

Biona’s coconut water is crafted from 100% Sri Lankan coconuts and is promoted as a clean hydration option rich in essential electrolyte potassium. The product contains no added sugar or artificial additives and is positioned as a natural alternative to sugary soft drinks and synthetic sport drinks.

Gemma Williams, head of marketing at Biona’s parent company Windmill Organics, emphasized the growth of the UK's functional beverage market, noting a shift from traditional sugary soft drinks to those offering specific health benefits. She expressed confidence in the new products' ability to meet needs for gut health, hydration, and boosted immunity without the reliance on supplements.

According to data from Mintel’s Global New Products Database, nearly one in four new product launches across the food and beverage sector now includes a functional claim. Specifically, in the UK, about 10% of food and non-alcoholic drink launches within the year leading to May featured such claims, marking an increase of two percentage points from the previous year.
