Americans Express Strong Loyalty in the Ongoing Coke vs. Pepsi Rivalry
The enduring rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi continues to be a defining feature of the American beverage market. The differences in ingredients, branding strategies, and cultural associations contribute to the strong consumer loyalties observed for each brand. Coca-Cola, recognized for its original formula, contains around 39 grams of sugar in a 12-ounce serving, while Pepsi includes approximately 41 grams and the addition of citric acid.
According to Beverage Digest, Coca-Cola held the top spot in U.S. soda sales in 2025, with 18.5% of the market share, while Dr Pepper was second with 8.8%. Pepsi regained its third-place position, achieving an 8.1% market share after falling behind Sprite temporarily in 2024.
Research conducted by Baylor College of Medicine in 2004 showed that the branding power of Coke significantly influences consumer preferences beyond taste alone. In the study, participants' brain scans revealed that brand recognition elicited strong associations linked to memories and decision-making, which did not occur with the Pepsi brand.
Pepsi has consistently employed marketing strategies to position itself as a worthy contender, notably reviving its "Pepsi Challenge" campaign in 2025. During this initiative, Pepsi Zero Sugar outperformed Coke Zero Sugar in taste tests conducted across various U.S. markets, securing a preference rate above 60%.
Experts, like Marion Nestle from New York University, note that although there are slight nutritional differences, both sodas contain high sugar levels, which can lead to rapid insulin spikes when consumed in large quantities frequently.
Overall, while taste is a fundamental aspect of consumer choice, it is not the sole determinant. Personal preferences, emotional connections to brand history, and cultural factors all play crucial roles in shaping consumer preferences in the Coke versus Pepsi debate.
